The Clinical Implication of Ego Strength in Schizophrenic Inpatients

Abstract
This purpose of this study was to examine the clinical implication of ego strength in psychiatric populations, especially inpatient schizophrenics using Barron's Es scale. The subjects were 324inpatiens, 125 of them were schizophrenics, 5 were
delusional disorders, 21 were brief reactive psychosis, 26 were bipolar disorders, 23 were major depressions, 44 were anxiety disorders, 16 were conversion disorders, 31 were personality disorders, 11 were acoholics and drug abusers, and 21 were
PTSDs(battered victims).
@ES The results were as follows :
@EN (1) Es scale was not useful instrument to diffentiate diagnostic groups.
(2) In case of schizophrenics, there was no significant difference on chronicity, but defensive test-taking attitude, variable, helpseeking behavior variable, and marital status variable were significant: more defensive group(L-F>5 and K-F>5)
had
higher ego strength scores, and no treatment group(onset period>2years but no admission history) had lowest ego strength scores, and married men group(as contrasted to married women, unmarried men and unmarried women) showed lowest ego srength
scores.
And (3) low Es group(T<40) and high Es group(T>55) were compared on the variables, such as age, sex, marital status, a place of residency, education level, onset, frequency of admission, hospitalization day, and IQ. It was found that when all
psychiatric inpatients were included, high Es group showed longer hospitalization day, and higher performance IQ than low Es group. But only schizophrenics were included, only hospitalization day variable was significant: high Es schizophrenic
group
showed longer hospitalization day. This suggests that the psychiatric patients having above average Es scale scores shows defensive attitude toward treatment, and so it takes long time to recover.
